One of the unique aspects of Horse Dance Theater is its exploration of a male body aesthetic. With ‘speed’ as its central theme, the choreographer of 2007’s new production Velocity develops the right timing, distance and point of evolution via the speed of exploration with games. During this work’s creation, the choreographer spent around two weeks exploring new views on speed through biking, darts and holding one’s breath underwater, which were then incorporated into the work.

The three large walls on the stage hold eight televisions which are an important aspect of the work. The kraft paper that covers the floor is the starting point for the piece, as the dancers fold them to create representations of tools from the stone-age to the present day. This display of the evolution of lifestyle highlights the effect speed has on the depth of our everyday experiences, whether it is walking, running or riding a bicycle; different speeds bring about wholly different stimulations of the senses.
